October Interview: Beccalights!

Here is the last interview from the October Sampler! It's with Kristen of Beccalights.com!

I just bought the Baked Bread scented candle discussed below. It's unbelievable! It smells EXACTLY like baked bread! Enjoy!

State your name and purpose
My name is Kristen Magee, and I run Beccalights.com, where I sell scented candles, scent melts and lip balms.
how did you get started?
I started making candles about three years ago, as a hobby. I gave them as gifts to friends and family but soon found that my home was being overtaken by scented candles. So, I decided that it was a good time to try and sell some.
you said that you're working on a baked bread scent....why aren't there more savory candle scents as opposed to sweet?
You know, that's an excellent question. Honestly, I'm not really sure why. I think it has to do with peoples' tastes...but I think that herbiferous scents have definitely been on the rise lately. Also, I think that bakery scents are quite popular because people associate them with childhood memories. There's a certain comfort in smelling something that reminds you of the past.
one study suggests that men find the smell of baked goods to be the most sensual smell of all...something to do with breast-feeding...but anywho....
I've heard that!
how does the scent creation process begin?
Well, there's a lot of testing and surveying involved. I ask friends, family and customers what they like, and I buy fragrances accordingly. But I also research what's out there and find scents that I think would work well. Lots of trial and error, but lots of fun!
ever created something really gross, or felt the urge to do so?
I don't know that I've personally had the urge, but I've read about people who make candles that smell like urine and wet dog. Dirt is about as gross as I get, so far.
why is schmuffin so good?
Hmm...well, I like it so much because it's very buttery and fruity. I tend to like buttery notes in bakery scents.
if you were invisible, would you still make stuff, or would you rob banks?
I think I'd probably still make stuff, maybe do it in public so people would get all freaky. The bank robbing option is appealing, though. Hee!
I wouldn't rob banks...that's dangerous! our time is almost at an end.
dog or cat?
cat. most definitely.
tom or jerry?
tom
tofurky?
scary.
mayo mustard or ketchup?
ketchup
favorite deli meat?
turkey. the real kind.
knit or crochet?
neither, but I want to learn to crochet.
savory or sweet?
depends on the time of the month.
I think that's time... did you have fun?
definitely! thanks for taking the time!
thank YOU!
