Snail-mail samples
By Kim Ossi
McClatchy-Tribune News Service
(MCT)SUPER SAMPLER We don't know about you, but the only time we get real snail mail is when we get a card for our birthday. But getting stuff in the mail is fun. And that's the very simple idea behind The Sampler (www.homeofthesampler.com). Granted, you pay for a subscription to the service, so it's not FREE stuff in the mail, but still -- real mail!
The Sampler sends subscribers monthly packages filled with handmade products from indie designers across the country. So you never know what your mailing will include, which, honestly, is half of the fun. (You can see "peeks" on the Web site.)
We just got our first package and some of our favorite stuff includes a hair pin featuring a button from Two Busy Bees (www.twobusybees.com), tattoo-themed rubber stamps and ink from Asta Arts (www.astaarts.com), a felt taco magnet from Cute As a Button, a makeup bag from Holland Cox (www.hollandcox.com), pins from Art Star Friends (www.artstarphilly.com) and gift tags from Mary Ann Abbot (www.averymarydesign.com) -- just to name a few. (And yes, some of the quality is better than others, depending on the designer's skill level.)
Go to the Web site and sign up (click on the right side of the main page: "learn about subscribing") to be alerted the next time they're accepting new subscribers. The Sampler has to limit subscribers so you'll get enough cool stuff in your package.
Also, stay up-to-date via their My Space page (MySpace.com/gosampler) or via LiveJournal (Community name: SamplerSampler). A one-month subscription is $23, or get three months for $53. Not too bad for a surprise in the mail.

Kim said that we can probably expect to see this write-up in "Chicago Tribune, Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Charlotte Observer, Buffalo (N.Y.) News... and others I'm totally forgetting right now." So... please keep your eyes peeled and let me know if you see it anywhere! I'd love to post it!

Featuring the works of Honorable Mention, Barcelona Bath & Body and Rosebud Designs.

Presenting Craftypreneur Roundup #1 -- the very first edition of Diane's quarterly series on "indie crafters who are making their own businesses," all of whom were chosen from the Sampler's Contributors! Diane is awesome!

ReadyMade Magazine and Leah of Craftster.org were kind enough to show their support for the Sampler's trip the MTV Movie Awards Pre-Show Style Lounge!

Note: actually, the number of samples you get doesn't increase with the number you contribute!
